The Cross Notched Roller Test (X-NRT) is a test method specifically developed to determine the surface strength of cylindrical ceramic rollers. The test provides information on tangentially oriented surface defects, which play a critical role in bearing applications. It can also be used for other brittle, cylindrical components. Maximilian Staudacher and Tanja Lube were involved in drafting the standard text as part of a working group of the Austrian Standards Committee 028. The scientific basis of the X-NRT stems from work carried out at the Chair of Structural and Functional Ceramics under the leadership of Maximilian Staudacher. The theory, practical implementation and finite element analysis (FEA) data are presented and discussed in two publications and a database, all of which are freely accessible.
