Armin Golesch from the Chair of Physical Metallurgy received a research grant from the WKO Steiermark for his master’s thesis, in which he investigated the microstructural effects of aging and wear on continuous casting rollers. Continuous casting rollers must withstand high temperatures, mechanical stresses, and chemical attack for as long as possible to ensure efficient and sustainable steel production. To understand the mechanisms responsible for the premature failure of continuous casting rollers, Armin Golesch employed various methods over different length scales: from optical microscopy over X-ray diffraction to scanning transmission microscopy. The findings are being incorporated by the industry partner into new design concepts for the next generation of continuous casting rollers.
