A team from the Department of Materials Science and the Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science has succeeded in publishing their latest findings on thin film metallic glasses in the renowned journal Nature Communications. The publication entitled ‘How to catch a shear band and explain plasticity of metallic glasses with continuum mechanics’ (free access at https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-49829-2) resulted from an FWF project supervised by Oleksandr Glushko (Chair of Physical Metallurgy). With the help of specially developed experiments in a scanning electron microscope, a model that explains the formation and propagation of shear bands in amorphous metal alloys during plastic deformation was suggested. The new insights gained into the fundamental deformation mechanisms of metallic glasses allowed to formulate novel concepts for advanced design of amorphous alloys
