Postdoc RAMADAN Zaher - Chair of Physical Metallurgy

  • Welcome Zaher, we are happy that you are now with us and would like to introduce you as a postdoc at our department. Since when have you been working at the Montanuniversität in Leoben?

I have been working at the Montanuniversität in Leoben since mid-November 2022.

  • What motivated you to do what you do today?

Since a young age, I've been fascinated by how things work, how they're made, and how natural phenomena occur. I've always wanted to know more about the world and deepen my perspective. Working in research allows me to explore new ideas, ask deeper questions, and push boundaries in order to gain deeper understanding and develop what we currently have.

  • What do you particularly like about working as a researcher?

Conducting research broadens the perspective and subject-specific expertise of the researcher. To be continually faced with challenges force the scientist to reconsider his presumptions and come up with new ideas. Additionally, the collaborative nature of research enables scientists to broaden their perspectives by connecting to others who share the same interests. Those are a few of the reasons why I like this field of work.

  • So, please introduce yourself and tell us how you felt after getting the confirmation for your postdoc position here in Leoben?

I received my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Aleppo university in Syria. Afterwards, I pursued my Master's degree and PhD at Jeonbuk national university, South Korea. Following that I worked as a researcher at the same university until I got this position here in Leoben. I was extremely excited to have received the confirmation for my position here as a postdoc. It's a great opportunity to work with such a talented team and contribute to the success of the project.

  • What is your research topic?

My research topic focus on developing a comprehensive model for silicon carbide (SiC) crystal growth in physical vapor transport (PVT) furnaces. SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor that can be used in the manufacture of high-frequency, high-temperature, and high-power devices. The SiC crystal growth is a hot topic but still open and encourages more in-depth investigation.

  • Besides all the work, you also need a balance. What do you like to do in your free time?

Living in a small city like Leoben while working at Montanuniversität has helped me achieve a better work-family balance. So in my free time I try to spend valuable moments with my family and engage in activities that I enjoy outside of work.

  • How and what do you like about the city of Leoben?

The natural surroundings and calm atmosphere of this city are truly stunning, making it a perfect place to escape the noise and chaos of the big city. I love that this city not only offers stunning views but is also a good place to raise my kids.
